Black Point, Novato single-family home

The site for this 2000sf, two-story, single-family residence is a steep, wooded hillside at the edge of a protected wetland/bird sanctuary in the rural Black Point area of Novato.  The form and materiality were inspired by the natural characteristics of the site as well as vernacular structures such as fishing shacks and "bird hide" observation shelters.  The footprint of the house is kept as compact as possible in order to preserve the maximum number of existing blue oaks.  Both the main structure and garage are elevated on pilings in order to minimize grading and hydrological disruption, while maximizing the views toward the wetland and Mt. Tamalpais beyond.  An open floor plan, double height living space, generous glazing and large decks help to unite interior and exterior.
