Mill Valley bungalow renovation
This 1,200sf renovation/expansion of a 1950's bungalow includes the modernization of the kitchen, a master suite addition, plus the conversion of a detached garage into a home office/art studio that can also double as an in-law unit or rentable live/work studio apartment. Designed and constructed on a tight budget, materials were chosen for their economy, aesthetics, as well as sustainability and/or durability: exposed OSB (oriented strand board) wall sheathing and painted concrete floors in office/studio, bamboo flooring, off-the-shelf cabinetry, granite counter tops, and tile with high recycled content in the main residence, plus low-VOC paints and new energy efficient appliances and lighting fixtures throughout, all under a 30-year asphalt shingle roof. The use of vibrant colors and simple yet playful lighting solutions create a dynamic interior environment while french doors, wood deck and stone patio create a strong visual and spatial connection to the exterior.
